Corporate Social Responsibility
Sumo Group takes an active approach to CSR both at home and locally in its key areas of activity.
The success of our people is the success of our company. We have many initiatives in place to support our employees, nurture their talent and provide a healthy, friendly, enriching, creative and safe environment in which to work.
Social interaction is encouraged between teams whenever possible with annual summer and Christmas parties, project wrap parties and a soon-to-be realised central refectory in the Sheffield HQ, which will enable all teams to come together and mingle between deadlines and milestones.
Lastly, we actively encourage creativity with regular game-jams, during which they have an opportunity to develop their own game concept.
We take our responsibility for the protection of the environment very seriously. Our green commitments are always growing but currently include the recycling of papers, inks, metals and plastics, the limitation of plastic water bottles (by providing filtered water in re-usable glass bottles wherever possible). We are in the process of introducing a recycling program for food-waste, which sees it turned into green energy for use by the local community.
We also have a number of environmental initiatives to encourage our staff to consider green alternatives: reserved parking for car-share commuters, a monthly ‘alternative travel’ prize draw, a cycle-to-work scheme and free charging facilities for electric vehicles.
We also support the ‘Fruitful Office’ charity, which provides fresh fruit baskets to the studio twice a week, with a tree being planted in Malawi, Africa for every basket consumed.
This is in addition to the standard energy saving awareness approach, which we apply to our hardware usage and on-site energy consumption control applied to lighting, air-con, water boilers, etc.
Sumo Group support several charities and are often involved in sponsorship, fund-raising, publicity, auctions and activities on their behalf:
The Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity
We are proud to support Sheffield Children’s Hospital. In 2016, Sumo Group sponsored the Volunteer’s Award in the Sheffield Children’s Star Awards and we regularly hold studio fundraising events in their honour, from book-sales to bake-offs.
GamesAid acts as a collective for charitable activity on behalf of the games industry. We raise funds for GamesAid through organised corporate events, such as its annual golf tournament and donations through our studio parties and activities.
The Prince’s Trust
We work closely with Sheffield Hallam University to support The Prince’s Trust in its initiatives to help young people into work and education, specifically through the ‘Get Started’ programme.
SpecialEffect is a charity that supports people with physical disabilities by bringing fun and inclusion back into their lives through gaming. They do this by modifying hardware to allow people to play to the very best of their abilities.
Finally, our studio in Pune, India, is actively involved in supporting the Akansha Foundation, a network of schools across Pune and Mumbai for children from low-income communities, designed to enable them to maximise their potential and transform their lives.
